President Alix presided over the meeting

Members Present: Alix, Loren,  Sundra, Bina, Matts, Barbara, Harvey, Mark, Jeffrey, Pattie, Frank, Parul & Shahid.

Guests Present: Joel Ramos

Meeting Highlights:
Meeting called to order at 12:25 by President Alix who led the pledge of allegiance, offered an invocation.  The Club Members recited the 4-Way Test and sang the Rotary Song.

Later in the meeting, a quorum was achieved with the arrival of several members and the minutes of September 13 and of September 27, 2017 were approved.

Shahid introduced his guest Joel Ramos of the Bronx who has attended the Club previously.

Birthdays and Anniversaries: Harvey suggested that the Club return to a previous practice of expecting members who celebrated a birthday or anniversary in a month to give a $5 or $10 gift (vs a fine) to the Club.  After considerable discussion weighing the pros and cons, Alix suggested that we consider the idea at another time.

Happy Bucks included a salute to Club member Sam Enders in Liberia who has been elected to the Country’s legislature.  Alix was extremely proud of her son who has had multiple successes due to his talent and hard work: an all-expense paid trip to Japan to take photos to promote Japanese tourism, a book of his photos is being published and a photo was used as the cover for an album.  $21 was collected.

School Pencils Project: Peggy, despite not being up to attending meetings right now, has contacted the school district and is waiting to hear the number of students in the grade we will deliver pencils to.  Once she has that number then she will determine if we need to order additional pencils and pencil boxes.  Bina said Mahbub has 10 boxes of 70 pencils each, leftover from last year's distribution.  Members will be asked to deliver the pencil boxes to the schools.

EarlyAct: Barbara spoke about the EarlyAct being developed at Hostos School.  One of their MicroSociety Ventures/Agencies is “Hostos Cares”, the equivalent of a nonprofit in their society.  Hostos Cares meets four times a week, Monday – Thursday, from 1:45 – 2:45 pm.  The teacher in charge, Laura Mendoza, suggested that the group meet as an EarlyAct every Thursday.  The children will hold a Rotary meeting, essentially on that day beginning on 26 October.  While Barbara will make every effort to attend every meeting, it would be best to have Rotarians who are knowledgeable and available to attend, especially if Barbara is unable to.  Alix said Father Phillipe Charles is very interested, but he cannot attend meetings on Wednesday because he has classes on Wednesdays and he is off on Thursdays and so can participate in the EarlyAct.  Shahid, Bina, and Alix are also interested in participating.  Alix also recommended that there be a formal induction of the students into EarlyAct, as is the Rotary tradition, once the program has its leadership and it is underway.
Barbara has already ordered 25 EarlyAct Rotary pins for the students who will put them on their name tags for Hostos Cares.

Yonkers Basics: Alix attended a meeting of Yonkers Basics, a program that started at Harvard for the City of Boston that is beginning here.  The Club was one of three organizations that donated funds for banners.  Y-EY donated $400.  The program is based on research that shows that in order to be healthy and to advance, infants and children up to the age of three require to be held, sung to, engage in conversations, be read to and respond to questions that lead to critical thinking.  Alix has volunteered to be on the fundraising committee.

Host for Japanese Exchange Student: Alix requested whether any members would be willing to host a Japanese student who has been here on a Rotary scholarship and will be interning at a NYC business, Trans Insight Corporation, for the month of November.  Mark offered a bedroom.  His daughters live with him.  He asked if Alix would contact the young woman and see if she would be comfortable doing so.

Committees List: Alix reviewed the committee list that was sent to all members yesterday.  Additions were: Community Service Grants – Mark, Chair; International Service Projects – Dialysis Machines in Calcutta – Parul, Chair; EarlyAct – Barbara, Chair; Pancake Breakfast – Peggy, Chair, Administrator of the Year – Peggy, Chair, Annual Installation Dinner – Alix, Chair; High School Scholarships – Bina
