Speaker Mark Johnson, President of RC of Briarcliff, spoke to us about the Cookstove Project (Changing Lives with Clean Cookstoves, which was initiated in 2013 in Uganda and Nepal.  The Project focuses on rural areas.  About 3.1 billion people rely on open cooking areas inside their homes on “3-stone fires”. These “fires” require large amounts of wood on a daily basis.   Wood gathering is done by women and children. It imperils the lives of women as they often must travel great distances and risk being assaulted. Children often miss school as their assistance is needed to collect the wood. The health of women and children is endangered as they experience the full impact of the smoke from the fires which is equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes a day.  More than 4 million die each year from the effects – more than those who die of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.  Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of death in children.  Clean Cookstoves provide a healthier and safer environment.  They pipe the smoke outside providing clean air and eliminating the environmental dangers associated with three-stone fires. Since they require 75% less wood, women are safer and children can spend more time in school.  Uganda has built 6,700 Clean Cookstoves and has 21 full-time employees.  Their goal is to build 300-500 per month.  Nepal has built 1,650 (with one-third lost when the earthquake hit) and has 4 employees.  The costs associated with Clean Cookstoves are $10 to build one stove, $20 to build for two families, $100 for ten families, and $1,000 for an entire village.

Guest Marta Rodriguez, a member of RC of Spring Valley, attended today.  Her Club has an annual Motorcycle Run fundraiser, which benefits the Rockland Veterans.
